📍 Things to Do in Tambo: The Ultimate Outback Itinerary

Welcome to Tambo, the oldest town in Queensland's central west! If you are travelling through the Outback, Tambo is an absolute must-stop destination. From rich history and world-famous sheepskin bears to the legendary Ben's Chicken Racing at the Royal Carrangarra Hotel, here is your perfect one-day itinerary.

☀️ Morning: History & Heritage

Start your day by stretching your legs and soaking in the deep cultural history of the area.

  • Tambo Heritage Precinct: Step back in time at the original Post and Telegraph offices, which once played a vital role in linking northern and southern Australia's early telegraph system. You can try your hand at the interactive Morse code display and listen to locals share fascinating town stories, including the tale of Qantas's only plane crash.

  • Grassland Art Gallery: Located right in the centre of town, visit this modern, purpose-built art facility. Opened in 2009, it is a climate-controlled hub that features beautiful, ever-changing exhibitions from local and regional artists. Entry is entirely free!  Also check on Rhonda Scott's workshop and gallery while in town, how lucky is Tambo to have a artist in residence!

  • Tambo Truck Display: Showcases the evolution of Australian transport, featuring beautifully restored vintage trucks and local artifacts that trace the journey from horse-drawn carriers in the 1860s to modern outback freight.

🧸 Midday: The Famous Tambo Teddies

No trip to Tambo is complete without visiting the iconic Tambo Teddies. You can watch the talented staff craft these gorgeous sheepskin teddy bears right before your eyes. Each bear is proudly named after a local Tambo district property—and while you are there, keep an eye out for the special "Ben's Hens" sheepskin chickens! It is the perfect spot to pick up a meaningful Outback souvenir.

🚐 Afternoon: Nature & Setting Up Camp

Take the early afternoon to unhitch the van and relax by the water.

  • Coolibah Walk & Tambo Dam: Take a peaceful self-guided stroll along the Coolibah Walk on the banks of the Barcoo River to enjoy the native birdlife and flora, plus visit the QANTAS Crash site memorial. Alternatively, head to Tambo Dam for a relaxing picnic or to stretch your legs.

  • Set Up Camp: Pull into either of Tambo's fantastic caravan parks or grab a spot at the Stubby Bend free camp. Stubby Bend is located close to the river and offers a brilliant place to unwind and watch the local wildlife in the evenings.

🍻 5:00 PM: The Main Event – Ben's Chicken Racing!

Once the van is parked, the real Outback fun begins.

  • Catch the Courtesy Bus: If you are staying at Stubby Bend, keep an eye out for our free white Hi-Ace courtesy bus starting its rounds at 4:15 PM. We also pick up from the Tambo Caravan Park at 4:45 PM.

  • Schnitzel Stadium Awaits: Head straight into the historic Royal Carrangarra Hotel (25 Arthur Street) for Ben's Chicken Racing! Held 7 nights a week at 5:00 PM (April to October), it is the most unique charity event in the West.

  • Dinner & Drinks: After the daily charity auction, grab a hearty pub meal made with meat from the local butcher, enjoy a cold beer in our pet-friendly bar, and stay for the live music. When you are ready to head home, the courtesy bus will drop you safely back to your camp!
